During a celebration commemorating the millennium of the founding of Rome, frenzied crowds attacked Christians. Apollonia was hit repeatedly breaking all her teeth. Her captors then set a large fire and threatened to burn her alive if she didn’t renounce Christ, so she jumped into the fire and was burned to deathSuicide like this was not uncommon esp among virgins wanting to protect their chastity.
