Bartholomew is said to have been one of the twelve apostles of Jesus. He and a fellow apostle, Jude, are thought to have brought Christianity to Armenia. Possibly as retribution for converting a local king, Bartholomew was put to death. There are three accounts of his death. The first says he was kidnapped, beaten unconscious and thrown into the sea to drown. In the second account he is crucified upside down. The third, and by far the most popular story, especially in artistic depictions of the saint, has him being skinned alive. He is often shown holding his skin.
