Cucuphos suffered during the persecution of Diocletian. It is said that he was handed over to twelve strong soldiers, who were ordered to whip him and tear his skin with iron nails and scorpions. He was then seasoned with vinegar and pepper and roasted alive but god intervened and saved him from injury or death. A large bonfire also failed to kill him and instead killed his would-be executioners. After finding Cucuphas in his cell illuminated with heavenly light, his jailers were converted to Christianity. The next day, he was flagellated with iron whips, but then the prefect Maximianus was killed when his carriage caught fire. The new prefect, Rufus, wisely decided to forget about torture of any kind and instead had him immediately excited by the sword
