Denis was sent to Lutetia (modern-day Paris) and made bishop. He brought with him two companions and they all preached the gospel and converted many people. The pagan priests became envious of their success and were not thrilled to be losing followers. Eventually the three men were imprisoned and tortured to renounce their faith, which none of them did. Finally, they were all beheaded. Legend says that after he was beheaded, Denis remained alive, picked up his head, and walked several miles to the cemetery where he wanted to be buried, preaching the gospel along the way.
