Hippolytus was a bishop of Rome in the early 3rd Century and was seen as one of the most important Christian theologians of the time. He and Pope Pontain, may have been exiled to Sardinia under the persecution of Emperor Maximus Thrax, and likely died in the mines, but this cannot be confirmed. While bishop he was often at odds with the popes of the time, who were softening the penitential system to accommodate the large influx newly converted pagans. These conflicts or the fact that there were other martyrs named Hippolytus may have been the cause of legends that began to spring up in the fourth century. The legend has him being dragged to his death by wild horses.
