Lawrence was a deacon in Rome and was responsible for distributing alms to the poor. The prefect in Rome demanded that he be brought the treasures of the church. Lawrence gathered together a large group the poor, sick, handicapped and misfortunate people and brought them to the prefect telling him the that they were the treasure of the church and that the church was far richer than his emperor. The prefect was so angry that prepared a great gridiron with hot coals and had Lawrence placed upon it. After suffering for some time, he cheerfully called to his torturers “I’m well done on this side, turn me over!”
