St. Lucy

Lucy was a virgin who refused to marry a pagan man and gave her dowry to the poor. The groom complained to the governor and she was sentenced to death for being a Christian. When they tried to move her, even with a team of oxen, she couldn't be moved. When they tried to burn here, she wouldn't burn. Finally they gouged out her eyes. Another version of the story has her gouging out her own eyes to make herself unattractive for to any suitors seeking to marry her. Either way she was eventually fatally stabbed in the neck, but her eyes were miraculously restored before her burial.
