The earliest stories of St. Sebastien have him as a middle aged Christian soldier serving in the Roman army. He was found out when converting prominent individuals. Diocletian admonished him for his betrayal and ordered that he be taken to a field and bound to a stake so archers could shoot at him. He was shot full of arrows and left for dead and then found by a widow still alive and nursed back to health. Diocletian eventually found out that he was still alive and had him beaten to death and thrown in the sewer. His body was recovered by a local woman who buried it in the catacombs. In most artwork, Sebastian looks nothing like the middle aged soldier he was reported to have been.
