The Council of Trent

The Protestant ReformationThe Reformation was initiated by Martin Luther in 1517, had several underlying causes

- - Corruption and Abuse: The sale of indulgences (forgiveness of sins for money), immoral behavior, and the selling of church offices angered reformers.
  - Theological Differences
  - Invention of the printing press allowed for the rapid spread of new ideas and easy access to the Bible in local languages.
  - Local European rulers wanted to break free from the authority of the Pope, keeping tax money at home rather than sending it to Rome.

This 16th-century religious movement resulted in a major divide in Western Christianity between Roman Catholics and Protestants. Protestant reformers, particularly Calvinists, often viewed religious art as "idolatrous" and this led a wave of iconoclasm, which involved the widespread destruction of Catholic images and statues

The Counter-ReformationThe Counter-Reformation was the Catholic Church’s response and reaction to the challenges posed by the Reformation. It was a period of profound spiritual re-fashioning and institutional revival intended to reclaim territory from Protestantism and reassert the dominance of the Catholic faith. The Council of Trent was a direct response to the Reformation.

In its final session in 1563, in response to Protestant criticisms, the Council of Trent issued a short but influential decree on sacred art intended to reform Catholic imagery that required the following

Instructional Clarity: Art was mandated to be direct and compelling in its narrative, providing an accurate presentation of biblical stories or the lives of the saints rather than adding imaginary moments.
Biblia pauperumIt (Bible for the poor): The art was meant to function as a universal language to teach and move the emotions of the less educated or illiterate.
Veneration of Person: The images should only represent the person depicted; therefore, veneration is paid to the person, not to the physical image itself.
Avoidance of Lasciviousness: Church leaders strictly forbade images that were "adorned with a beauty exciting to lust" or any form of "lasciviousness". This led to the removal of unnecessary nudity and a shift away from the more sensual Mannerist style of the time.
Decorum and Order: Nothing was to be seen that was "disorderly, or that is unbecomingly or confusedly arranged" or profane. The "atrocity of martyrdom" should be depicted realistically to ensure the viewer's devotion was not distracted by purely aesthetic virtuosity.
Ecclesiastical Oversight: The Council ordained that no "unusual image" could be placed in a church unless it had been approved by a bishop.
Elimination of Superstition: All "superstition shall be removed" from art, and the inclusion of classical pagan elements in religious works was effectively prohibited.
