This was one of two paintings done by Marcello Leopardi as a replacement for an older picture that was destroyed for renovations. When the renovations were cancelled these new paintings were added to fill the empty spaces. After refusing to renounce faith, Margaret was tortured and then imprisoned. She had her flesh torn, and was scourged, burned, and plunged into boiling water, and yet remained uninjured. In prison, the devil appeared to her as a dragon and swallowed her. The dragon was either cut open by the cross she carried and she burst out from him, or he was irritated by the cross and spit her out. Either way she survived. Finally her life ended with beheading.Because of her 'birthing' from the dragon, she became the patron saint of pregnancy, labor and childbirth.
