Around 1150 BCE, a draughtsman in Thebes was creating a papyrus scroll that contained illustrations of a story about animals. The animals are busy doing human activities and this takes up about 1/3 of the scroll. After completing this section, he drew a vertical line down the length of the scroll. He then began work on another subject, an erotic story, that had become popular among the locals.
We don’t know if the story was based on actual events or was just fiction; but, ever since the scroll resurfaced, three millennia after its creation, its drawings have been the focus of a variety of interpretations and speculations.
