The Ancient Greeks are renowned for embracing their sexuality. So it’s not surprising that the first documented use of a dildo comes from Ancient Greece, where merchants sold a tool called an olisbos. These were a type of dildo-like object commonly found in Ancient Greece, which was typically made from softened leather, which was stuffed with wool and then polished for a smooth finish. While archeologists have found a lot of prehistoric dildo-like objects, their use remains speculative. But with the ancient greeks, there is art confirming the explicit sexual use of the olisbos
Bread dildo: We’re not actually sure if a dildo made of bread is a real historical thing or just a double entendre based on the shape of a loaf, and honestly, there is not really any evidence that this was a thing. Ancient Greek writer Hesychius (compiled the richest lexicon of unusual and obscure Greek words that has survived) uses the word “olisbokollix,” which combines the words for “bread” and “dildo.” That’s the only place we see the word. There are three surviving paintings that purportedly portray bread dildos but they involve women carrying a basket or vase full of them (the ancient equivalent to the proverbial bag of dicks), but it’s not at all clear that they are in any way baked goods.

Vase 5th Century BCEIn Greek mythology, Zeus abducted Ganymede, a mortal youth, and made him his cupbearer on Mount Olympus. Eventually Zeus granted Ganymede immortality. Originally Zeus admired the boy's beauty, but by the 6th Century BCE the story had turned sexual with Zeus falling in love with the boy and taking him as a lover. During the Renaissance the story became a symbol of homoerotic love. More recently, however, Ganymede has been seen as just another of Zeus's rape victims.The dildo being used in this painting is tied with a string. It was likely a leather olisbos that had been stuffed and tied.
