At that time in the city of Miletus, which would have been in what is now Balat, Türkiye, was known as the olisbos production and distribution center. Aristophanes’s play Lysistrata from 411 BC was the first record that hints that men were replaced with phallic devices and the olisboi were used for masturbation.
In the play, Lysistrata proposes a radical solution to ending the Peloponnesian War: that the women of the city go on a sexual strike. But the women are complaining because not only are the men away fighting but if they refuse them sex when they are home, they would never get any sexual gratification. Their main problem was that since the city of Miletus was fighting on the other side, they couldn't get their hands on any dildos. So then, one of the main reasons the women were so intent on stopping the was that they wanted sex.
Lysistrata:Are you not sad your children's fathersGo endlessly off soldiering afarIn this plodding war? I am willing to wagerThere's not one here whose husband is at home.
One woman responds:Mine's been in Thrace, keeping an eye on EucratesFor five months past.
And another says:And mine left me for PylosSeven months ago at least.
A third says:And as for mineNo sooner has he slipped out frae the lineHe straps his shield and he's snickt off again.
Lysistrata:And not the slightest glitter of a lover! And since the Milesians betrayed us, I've not seenThe image of a single upright manTo be a marble consolation to us.Now will you help me, if I find a meansTo stamp the war out.
