Vatsyayana’s sanscrit Kama Sutra is the world’s oldest writing on sex and contains numerous references to a variety of sex toys.
The section entitled “Occult Practices” describes a variety of apparatus used for sexual intercourse, which were made from wood, rubber, gold, silver, copper, ivory and horn.
It also provides detailed descriptions of the shapes and sizes of these sex aids, including:
rounded sticks
curved sticks in the shape of mortars,
objects shaped like flower buds
others shaped like elephant trunks.
The text states that when men have no sex partner, they may satisfy themselves “with dolls.” This is one of the oldest references to the use of sex dolls.
It also mentions artificial sex organs (male masturbation aids) fashioned from “hollowed out pumpkins” and “bamboo moistened with oil and ointment.”
It describes in detail one of the first treatment options for erectile dysfunction involving dildos and penis extensions made of wood or reeds tied to the waist that appear to be the equivalent of the modern-day strap-on.
There is also the first mention of penis implants in the form of nodules inserted beneath the skin of the penis to enhance the pleasure of sexual partners during intercourse.
