Not every penis shaped object that is dug up from an archeological site is a sex toy. Often other phallic shaped items will be erroneously presented as sex toys. Sometimes this is an honest mistake, but more often than not these items are presented out of context and out of scale for the sole purpose of sensationalizing the topic. For example, in ancient Rome, penises were everywhere. In the remains of Pompeii and Herculaneum, archeologists have dug up a multitude of phallic shaped objects that were definitely not sex toys. Many of these items were amulets that were worn for protection especially by children. Some were oil lamps and others were wind chimes and they were only used for those purposes. In fact these objects were so typical they were just a normal part of life. The ancient Romans would likely be quite surprised that anyone would even consider that these objects were used for anything other than their intended purposes.
